Protist Rhapsody is a full-dome film set inside a virtual petri dish.

An emergent organism grows there, inspired by Physarum polycephalum, a single-celled slime mold with no brain that can solve mazes. Unseen currents of nutrients swirl around it and shift in response to it. Its programmed instincts pull one way, the environment another. On the dome, you are inside the dish.

Over time the organism spreads until it fills its world, consuming everything. Then it turns on itself, its insides tearing each other apart until nothing recognisable is left. From what remains, many are born, and instead of consuming, they connect. The film's three parts, Birth, Destruction and Resurrection, echo nature's chemistry and humanity's oldest myths. Together they trace the struggle between the inner pulse of life and the pressures of the world beyond.

Created with Uncharted Limbo's bespoke generative system, the film fuses scientific simulation with immersive storytelling. The organic soundscape, crafted by composer and sound designer Elias Aronidis, won Best Sound-Driven Work at SAT Fest 2024.
